Customers or Curious Visitors? How to Attract the Right People in the Water Treatment Industry

You could have 70 people stopping by your stand.

Ā

You could have a showroom full of visitors.

Ā

You could be getting more website traffic, followers and likes.

Ā

But how many of those people could actually become customers?

If you sell or rent water dispensers, reverse osmosis systems or other water treatment solutions, that’s the question that really matters.

Ā

Because it’s easy to mistake activity for results.

Ā

A busy stand feels successful. A showroom with plenty of visitors feels successful. A website attracting more traffic feels successful.

Ā

But activity alone doesn’t generate business.

Ā

Your business doesn’t depend on how many people walk through the door.

Ā

It depends on reaching people who are genuinely in a position to buy or rent your systems.

Ā

Ā

70 Curious Visitors or 7 Potential Customers?

Ā

Imagine you’re exhibiting at a trade show.

Ā

Throughout the day, dozens of people stop by your stand.

Ā

Some look at your water dispensers, some pick up a brochure and others ask a few questions.

Ā

At the end of the day, it might feel like the event went well because you spoke to a lot of people.

Ā

But how many of those conversations are likely to turn into real sales opportunities?

Ā

Would you rather speak to 70 people who are simply curious, or 7 people who have a genuine need, are actively looking for a solution and are in a position to make a buying decision?

Ā

That’s where the mindset changes.

Ā

You’re not in the water treatment business to entertain people.

Ā

You’re there to meet customers who can genuinely benefit from your products and services.

Ā

Ā

Ā

Who Are the Right People in Water Treatment?

Ā

That depends on the market you serve.

Ā

If you work in the Ho.Re.Ca. sector, for example, you might want to speak to restaurant owners, hotel managers and decision-makers within hospitality businesses.

Ā

These are people dealing with real operational challenges around water: managing bottles, storage space, logistics, stock, day-to-day operations or margins.

Ā

If you work with businesses and offices, you might want to reach the people responsible for workplaces with dozens or even hundreds of employees.

Ā

In the residential market, your customer might be a household looking for a better way to manage its water needs at home.

Ā

Different markets have different customers and different needs.

Ā

But the principle is the same.

Ā

The right prospect is someone who has a genuine need that your system can help address.

Ā

And you shouldn’t simply wait for that person to find you.

Ā

You need to attract them.

Ā

Ā

Ā

1. Make a List of the People You Want to Reach

Ā

The first step is simple.

Ā

Ask yourself:

Ā

ā€œWho do I actually want to see at my stand, in my showroom or sitting across the table from me?ā€

Ā

Start with the contacts you already have.

Ā

Former customers, dormant leads, people who asked for information but never took the next step, quotes that never turned into orders, referrals from partners or potential customers in your area.

Ā

If you work in Ho.Re.Ca., you could identify restaurants, hotels and hospitality businesses that are likely to have a genuine need for your solutions.

Ā

The goal isn’t to build the longest list possible.

Ā

It’s to build the right list.

Ā

So before asking how many people you want to reach, ask yourself who you actually want to reach.

Ā

Ā

Ā

2. Give Them a Good Reason to Come to You

Ā

Building a list isn’t enough.

Ā

You also need to give those people a reason to spend their time with you.

Ā

Simply saying:

Ā

ā€œCome and see our water dispensersā€

probably won’t do it.

Ā

Instead, start with the customer’s problem.

Ā

Imagine approaching a restaurant owner with this message:

Ā

ā€œI’d like to show you how you could reduce the hassle of managing bottled water, free up valuable space and improve your margins.ā€

Ā

That’s a very different conversation.

Ā

In the first example, you’re asking for their attention.

Ā

In the second, you’re offering a potential solution to a problem they deal with every day.

Ā

Your reason for meeting could be a demonstration, a trial, a consultation, a case study or a personalised assessment.

Ā

Whatever you choose, it should answer one simple question:

Ā

ā€œWhy should this person make time to speak to me?ā€

Ā

Having great water dispensers and excellent customer service matters.

Ā

But customers only get to experience those things once they start doing business with you.

Ā

First, you need to give them a reason to start the conversation.

Ā

Ā

Ā

3. Learn to Qualify Your Leads

Ā

Once people start coming to you, the next step is knowing how to qualify them.

Ā

Not every contact should receive the same amount of your time and attention.

Ā

Someone who fits your target market, has a genuine need and is actively considering a solution deserves a more in-depth conversation.

Ā

Find out what problem they’re trying to solve.

Ā

What are they doing today?

Ā

Who is involved in the buying decision?

Ā

How soon are they looking to make a change?

Ā

Someone who is simply gathering information should still be treated professionally and courteously, but they shouldn’t take valuable time away from stronger opportunities.

Ā

Your sales time is a valuable resource.

Ā

Use it where it has the greatest potential to generate business.

Ā

Ā

Ā

Don’t Sell the Water Dispenser. Start with the Problem

Ā

This is particularly important in the water treatment industry.

Ā

It’s easy to focus on the product.

Ā

The technology.

The system capacity.

The filtration process.

The design.

The technical specifications.

Ā

All of these things matter.

Ā

But first, you need to understand why the customer should care.

Ā

A restaurant owner probably doesn’t wake up in the morning thinking:

Ā

ā€œI need a new water dispenser.ā€

Ā

They might, however, be thinking about the space taken up by bottles and crates, deliveries, storage, costs or margins.

Ā

That’s where the conversation should start.

Ā

First the problem.

Ā

Then the solution.

Ā

And only then the product.

Ā

That way, you’re not simply selling a system.

Ā

You’re showing the customer how you could make their day-to-day operation easier or more efficient.

Ā

Ā

Ā

The Same Rule Applies Online

Ā

The same principle applies to your online marketing.

Ā

Website visits, views, followers and likes can all be useful metrics, but they don’t automatically translate into business.

Ā

A piece of content seen by 100 people who closely match your ideal customer profile could be far more valuable than one seen by thousands of people who will never buy from you.

Ā

So don’t just ask:

Ā

ā€œHow much traffic are we generating?ā€

Ā

Ask:

Ā

ā€œAre we attracting the right people?ā€

Ā

Ā

Ā

Business Comes from the Right People, Not the Biggest Crowd

Ā

The next time you prepare for a trade show, organise an event at your showroom or launch a marketing campaign, don’t just ask:

Ā

ā€œHow can I attract more people?ā€

Ā

Ask:

Ā

ā€œWho do I actually want to attract?ā€

Ā

Build your list.

Ā

Identify the customers you want to reach.

Ā

Give them a compelling reason to speak to you.

Ā

And when they do, learn to recognise which opportunities deserve more of your time.

Ā

A busy stand might look impressive.

Ā

A large social media following might feel like a great result.

Ā

But your business doesn’t run on crowds.

Ā

It runs on customers.

Ā

And real business comes from getting in front of the right people.
